Treasure Chest

hollybailey:

Mr. Youngaitis said much of his business was trophy work: hunters coming in with small game or deer heads to mount, or bears to make into rugs.

Other customers are bereaved pet owners who want their dog or cat or hamster or turtle stuffed for posterity. “I’m almost like a funeral director sometimes, when pet owners come in crying,” he said. “I have to help them with their grief.”

Excellent, easy to understand article outlines why killing animals for sport does NOT benefit their populations. So much for that myth!

Now, let’s ban safari hunting in Africa completely. Go here to sign the petition.

Except there’s so many things wrong with that article, and half of it is based on personal feelings with nothing to back up the so-called facts.

For a start, it fails to mention issues such as poaching, the bush meat trade and war are far bigger threats than trophy hunting.

The author is also assuming that only healthy pride males are being killed. This is not true. Only males over a certain age can be killed, and each lion killed has been specifically selected because they are either old, weak, sick, injured or attacking livestock. These are animals that would die or be killed anyway, but giving hunters the opportunity to pay big sums of money to do the job it allows parks to benefit from that death.

As mentioned previously, it also ignores the fact that with hunting being banned in Botswana the illegal poaching and poisoning of lions could massively increase. Some of the worst poaching of iconic species happens in national parks. It should be obvious to anyone that large unregulated killing is far worse for lions than small amounts of regulated killing.

Also it’s not just trophy hunting that has been banned but all hunting, including that done by the people living there. That is extremely problematic as many people in the country will rely on hunting wildlife for food or money. When you ban citizens from hunting it causes a lot of resentment and unregulated poaching becomes a much bigger problem. Poachers also become revered and even respected for taking back the people’s right to their own wildlife.

While tourism contributed more to the economy than hunting, hunting still plays an important financial role in many areas as well. Turning away the money from hunters is stupid as you want to get as many people contributing their money as possible. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why not both, after all, both have their benefits, and some areas benefit more from hunting. Even groups like the World Wildlife Fund support trophy hunting in areas where it’s proven to work. Not all areas are the same and it’s foolish to believe that tourism and safaris will be the answer in every location.

It also mentions that they hope the hunting land is brought by tourism companies, but there’s no guarantee it will be. What if that land gets brought up by developers. What happens to the wildlife then? Whether you like it or not, game reserves have been vital in protecting large tracts of African wilderness that would otherwise have been developed or turned into farmland.

And one last point is that that all those national parks are very isolated. The genetic diversity of lions in Botswana is extremely low, and they are on the verge of population collapse. Unless all those parks are joined up then no amount of “eco-tourism” is going to save Botswana’s lions.

What howtoskinatiger said.
